Library Cards

A library card is required in order to charge materials out of the library.  Garden City residents will receive a library card upon showing a picture ID with proof of residency (driver’s license, state identification card, etc.) Minors under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present to obtain a library card. Teachers may receive a library card valid for one year with proof of employment with the Garden City School system.  Patrons may only have one library card in the shared patron database.

Library cards are valid for three years, expiring on the patron’s birthday.  Cards will be renewed upon verification that the patron’s address and telephone number are up-to-date.  Cards which have expired or have not been used for six months, and which have no fines attached, will be automatically purged from the computer database.  A patron whose card is no longer in the database will need to apply for a new library card. There is no charge for a Garden City library card.

Patrons are strongly encouraged to have their library card with them when checking out materials.  If no library card is presented, library staff may ask to see other identification.  In the event of a computer failure, library cards must be presented.  For security reasons, patrons must use their own library cards.

The Garden City Library accepts cards from all libraries in the Library Network who participate in the reciprocal borrowing agreement.  Garden City does not participate in the MichiCard program.

If a library card is lost or stolen the library should be notified immediately.  Patrons are responsible for the materials charged out on their cards.
